I have always hated having to pull out my Nokia N90 and click through a bunch of buttons then scan for WiFi or whipping out my laptop and booting it up just to find out that… well, no WiFi.
So I decided to pick up a keychain WiFi Locater, I usually don’t like “this only does one thing” type of electronics but after looking at several online I decided on the Kensington WiFi Finder Plus because if its size and the quality of Kensington products (actually I couldn’t find another name brand WiFi Locator).
The Kensington WiFi Finder Plus is a little bigger than a pack of matches and weighs about as much as a cigarette lighter. Using it is extraordinary simple, press the chrome button – a red light on the bottom LED means no WiFi, green means one of 5 signal strengths of WiFi. A blue light will come on if their is a Bluetooth signal (not sure why you would need that). That’s it…
I have used it in airports, coffie shops, shopping malls and just walking around in the Middle East and Southeast Asia and it works great. Sometimes I will get a single green light that ends up not being a WiFi signial (not sure what it is) so I will only fire up my laptop or phone if I have 3 or more green lights. It also has an LED flashlight, a pretty handy feature if you are looking for WiFi hotspots in the dark.
Overall I would say that it is a great expat and travelers tool.
