Sexy Singers in Indonesia (With Video)
I remember the first time I saw a dangdut show not long after I moved to Jakarta. About three years ago a few of my local buddies came over to drink and watch an MMA fight at my apartment. After the fight we were a bit sauced up so I suggested “hey, lets friggin do something”. One of my buddy asked me “Have you ever seen a dangdut singer?”, I was like “a what, is that a traditional dance?” thinking it was some sort of traditional Indonesian village dance with painted faces dancing around with shields and spears. “Hahahahaa… no man, no worry, you will like it”.
After driving over an hour through Jakarta’s traffic with 5 guys stuffed into a compact Honda we arrived at the show. At this point I could just hear the singing and thought to myself “Is this Indo pop music?”. But whatever, I had a buzz and it was better than sitting in my apartment. To my surprise, as soon as we walked around the corner I saw a beautiful Indonesian gal wearing a skimpy outfit dancing like Shakira at a strip club on stage. “This is off the hook Bro! What is this?” I said, “Its dangdut man, it used to only be popular in the villages but now it’s popular with everyone” my buddy explained. After watching the dangdut dancer sing and shake it for an hour I was hooked, I was now an official dangdut fanboy.

Dangdut sort of sounds like Malay, Arab and Indian (like the Bollywood songs) blended together, sometimes with a little hip-hop and R&B thrown in. It’s not bad, but I probably wouldn’t listen to it in my car. What separates Dangdut from just being another type of ethnic music you can’t understand is the dangdut singers sexy dance performances at shows. They generally wear short skirts, reveling tops or skin tight everything and dance quite provocatively.
Like my buddy said it was originally only popular with the working-class Indonesians but became popular with the masses when politicians started using dangdut performances to attract the working-class vote (think Bill Clinton at an AC/DC concert in New Jersey). Now dangdut is somewhat popular with mainstream Indonesians (some upper-class Indos still think it is the “common mans” music), even to the point that all of their personal scandals are on the gossip channels. A few dangdut singers have albums (not that anyone really goes to the shows for the music), most people just buy pirated VCD’s of dangdut performances from small venders in shopping malls and street stands, by some estimates dangdut VCD sales are in the tens of millions. They also have male dangdut singers, but who cares.
The future for Dangdut singers is somewhat in the air now, Indonesia has recently passed a controversial “Anti-Porn” law that (sort of) bans immoral performances and very reveling clothing (or something like that, just google “Indonesia anti porn” if you care). No one really knows if this law is going to be like just about every other Indonesian law - ignored and not enforced. A small minority of people in Indonesia thinks Dangdut is immoral, but most regular Indonesians look at them in the same way that people in the west look at people who say “if you watch an R rated movie you will go to hell”. Personally I think Dangdut makes allot of people money and is too popular with the middle and working class voters to be outright banned.
The video below is a dangdut singer performance by Mela Barbe, as far as I know she not a really well known dangdut singer but she seems to be one of the “naughtier” performers – and my personal favorite. Most dangdut singers wear short spandex shorts under their tiny dresses but Mela just wears black underwear and squats with her legs spread wile she sings. The best part is about ¼ the way in…

Last week outside of Jakarta they had a wild Dangdut show with the Singers climbing up on the stage supports spread eagle with tiny skirts on pumping and thrusting – the guys in the crowd went so crazy they started fighting each other, a bunch of guys ended up getting arrested – lol
it will never be banned and alot of the rich hire them for birthday parties
