Thailand Expat

Let me take you back a few years, namely to the year 1999. This was before I lived in Thailand, however, by this time I had already visited the countries’ sun-soaked shores over seven times. I returned each year like a nice chap and did my best to help third world poverty by employing some of the locals. Well, to be more precise, local females. After all, you have to do your bit! Feed the world and all!

I was familiar with the whole bar scene and I knew it all, or at least I thought I did. You see being a tourist and having numerous visits under your belt tends to make you a little gung-ho that way.

I used to hit the red light areas of Bangkok, all the well-known places: Soi Cowboy, Nana, and occasionally Patpong. My favorite haunts tended to be the Nana and Cowboy as they were a ten-minute walk from my hotel.

This is where I first met Chuun. Chuun was a 28-year-old woman from the Issan province. I met her at Soi Cowboy in one of it’s many bars, can’t remember off hand, funny the beer seems to have that affect on me. Well it was a long time ago, and many a brass has cum and gone since then.

Getting back to Chuun…she wasn’t a looker and I’m at odds as to why I ever picked her up. I think she looked okay in the darkness of that cowboy bar, coupled with the fact I had my beer goggles on!

Several years ago, while flying back to Thailand from Indonesia, a voluptuous young Asian woman took the seat next to me. Now most of the time I keep my trap shut while flying, even going as far as listening to my IPod to block out any blabbermouths that happen to sit next to me, but of course, this was different. Her smell alone made me take notice; she was sexy as hell, one of those rare women who managed to get my testosterone pumping full speed by her mere presence.

I knew had to talk to her and go for the number close – so I did. Within minutes, I knew her vital information. She was a 23-year-old Thai living in Indonesia, Surabaya to be exact, and she had been living there off and on for about a year. She gave “Coyote Dancer” as her profession.

Last night, Nick Gatsby, one of my Thai buddies, and myself went out to a club and ended up bringing back like ten girls to party at the ERS Penthouse in Bangkok. All started great, you know, the usual, we popped a few bottles of champagne, kicked on the music, and ordered some chow.

Everything was going smoothly; about one hour into the party I had a very cute white skinned Thai woman with fantastic, fake boobs in my room. I was on cloud nine, making out with her until… knock, knock, and knock. It was my Thai buddy “Hey bro, one of the girls frigging sliced her hand open.”

All expats who frequent the gogo bar scene tire of it at one point or another. In the beginning, despite only drinking alcohol on a limited basis, I hit the bars from the early afternoon until six or seven in the morning, daily. This went on for three or four years before I grew weary of my carousing.

Nana Disco (Angels) was open until three or four in the morning, as were the Go-Go bars across the street and the legendary Thermae Coffee Shop was open until sunrise. I could never get enough. I constantly made mental notes of who worked where and added them on my “to do” list.

Upon awakening, I would work for two or three hours (yes, that’s it), hit Starbucks for breakfast and then walk to one of the many bars on Soi Nana. If I was feeling halfway decent and there was decent company available, I would head back to my apartment for a two to three hours of stress relief.

There comes a time most men’s lives when for whatever reason, they become involved in a serious relationship, eventually taking the plunge and getting married.

No matter where you live, marriage is always a dicey prospect, but when sex is more available than chocolate, it becomes even more hazardous.

When most men arrive in Thailand, they are like kids in a candy store. So many women in all shapes and sizes and with some of them, if you pay them a little money, they go away and leave you to your own vices. Others seem so sweet and lovable; how could you possibly resist?

Hua Hin Biker weekend kicked off with nearly every biker gang in Thailand descending on Hua Hin for the party.

Hosted and organized by the Vampires and the other local gang Headstone Riders this was a pretty professional and slick operation. The Entrance fee was 100 baht and you got a nice little tag to where along with a paddock to park your bike with the other machines. As well as that you got a free drink of Chang!

The day started with a mass biker rally which toured Hua Hin and was back at the venue for about five in the evening. Kites flew, the ground shook, and it was like a mass bike complex within an hour.  Just one look at the paddock told you there must have been over a thousand machines with enough chrome to warrant wearing sunglasses at night!

We showed up and figured that the there was too much space, how wrong we were. Within 3 hours the place was rammed as yet more Harleys and Choppers showed up!

Back home, spilling a bloke’s pint or insinuating that his football team are a bit rubbish isn’t the done thing. It gets people’s backs up and you better be ready to deal with the anger that follows. As a result, most people avoid doing these things.

Out here in Thailand, different lines have been drawn over the years, and it seems that pointing out some home truths to your fellow escapers of rain is liable to provoke a lot of hubris and the expulsion of the blunt missive which forms the title of this piece.

Ya see, though Thailand undeniably has less precipitation than Salford and the local lasses are far less likely to sing along enthusiastically to Shania Twain, it also has deeply flawed aspects which are more than capable of, well, killing you.

But if you raise any concerns or attempt to voice your fears (road safety, plane safety, nightclub safety…safety in general really, draconian laws, two-tier pricing, broken contracts, late pay, corrupt and therefore useless police, the indoctrination of children, lack of protection for women etc) be prepared to hear some obtuse horse-s**t pour out of the rabble about how it’s just the same back home.

One of the most frequent questions Thai women ask foreigners is “Why do foreigners like dark-skinned Thai women.” The supposed proclivity for dark-skinned women is unfathomable, for the low-class folk, mostly laborers and migrant workers are dark skinned. Why would “rich foreigners” be so attracted to females that most Thai consider low-class?

Americans spend big money each year to tan their skin; Thais spend huge sums to whiten it. In the west, tan skin is a sign of health, fitness, and prosperity. If you have a tan, you must have the time and money to lie around by the pool or at the beach. For those afraid of skin cancer, spray-on tans are all the rage.

When was the last time you saw a Thai Airways flight attendant with dark skin? Rarely will you ever see a TV, or movie star with anything but Lilly white skin–even if airbrushed or whitened with bright lights. After showering, Thai women make it a point to put baby powder on their face and body, and regularly use whitening creams and other cosmetics purported to make their skin lighter and more beautiful. In some circles, white skin is even viewed as a sign of superior intelligence.

Dark-skinned Thais were ecstatic when Barrack Obama won the U.S. Presidential election, thinking it meant an end to discrimination, but it did nothing to sway Thailand’s former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, who made no bones about his own partiality for fair skin, saying, “We will continue to prefer the whitest men and women in television, film, and bed.”

So just why are dark-skinned Thai women so appealing to foreigners?
