Some have desperately sought this place for years and pass by without even noticing the place. From the outside, it doesn’t look like a hotel and therefore many people ignore it.
However, most taxi drivers know the way, especially the ones from Jalan Paletehan (expect a 15/20 minutes drive from Blok M at night to be around 50,000 Rupiah if you are good, or closer to 100,000 if you are drunk or a poor negotiator.
Each room at the Pondok Wisata hotel comes with its own private indoor parking so that no one can see who comes in or out and there’s no reception desk! Think of it as a drive-in where you pay up for a six to twelve hour stay. Hundred of beds are available and all rooms are equipped with huge mirrors on the wall that reflect private activities.

An ongoing joke Mr. Smith and I have going is whether this “hotel” actually ever has people calling to reserve rooms. I found the BathHouse at the Alexis Hotel late one January night in ’08 buried in a sea of web pages about Indonesian night life.

The Melawai Hotel, is a run-down cheap hotel on the edges of Blok M. A few years ago it was known for its busy and popular disco but now it is a convenient place to take girls for the night who have been picked up in My Bar or Top Gun on the Blok. The room rates are reasonable and the staff are discreet, although don’t expect luxury.
However, within its walls is the real reason why this place has got a glowing reputation from those expats who have been here a while. The 5 + 1 bar as it is affectionately called or the sixth floor of the hotel is what gives it its legendary status.

Delilah on Gatot Subroto is a huge club situated near the Planet Hollywood restaurant and consists of two floors, pool tables, a big dance floor and a stage. The music, as you’d expect, is mainly middle eastern dance tunes with the live band playing Arabic music. This in itself is a cultural experience as you watch how the men and women shake their thing to the music.
However, I suspect that most frequenters of this site are not going to bars for the music and ambience alone. When an expat rockstar has a night out, women are usually an essential part of the evening’s entertainment.

Despite its position as the capital of the world’s largest Muslim population, Jakarta has always been famed for its raucous nightlife. However, most expats, whether here long-term or short-term, rarely venture from the confines of Blok M or the hotel bars. The area around Mangga Besar may look dilapidated but it is the area of the old China Town and where many of Jakarta’s Chinese businessmen like to hold their business meetings or simply go and unwind.
The amount of signs hanging from hotels offering spas or karaoke lounges should give some clue as to what type of services are on offer up here, but that is only part of the story. Located in one of Jakarta’s swanker shopping malls and (oddly) above a bowling alley and pool hall is one of Jakarta’s best bar/lounges, the Mojito Lounge. The Mojito Lounge is a small lounge and bar with a great selection of cigars, comfortable couches and a wile menu of different types of Mojito’s (hence the name).

The Expat Player here, this weeks GoGo review will be the Dollhouse Agogo located on Soi 23 Sukhumvit Road, downtown Bangkok. I went there with James Grey (he hates gogo bars so I had to drag him along) and Nick Gatsby.
Alott of people like the Nana Entertainment Plaza for hitting up gogo bars when they are in Bangkok but I prefer Soi Cowboy. In my opinion it is a bit cleaner and the girls are less pushy, I also like to check out all of the gogo bars just by walking down the street (nana is more like a multi-level strip mall).
When you first walk into the Dollhouse Agogo you see the familiar dancing stage with stripper poles and a bar in the back. We grabbed a seat at the bar cuz James G wanted to get his drink on and ordered a few drinks and took in the sights.
They had a bunch of girls dancing that ranged from -1 up to solid 7’s with allot in-between. The waitstaff was nice and not pushy and the gogo girls were also friendly and not pushy.
