Despite its position as the capital of the world’s largest Muslim population, Jakarta has always been famed for its raucous nightlife. However, most expats, whether here long-term or short-term, rarely venture from the confines of Blok M or the hotel bars. But, fellow expat rockstars there is a much wilder scene to be explored in the maze of flashing neon and run-down side streets of North Jakarta.
The area around Mangga Besar may look dilapidated but it is the area of the old China Town and where many of Jakarta’s Chinese businessmen like to hold their business meetings or simply go and unwind.
The amount of signs hanging from hotels offering spas or karaoke lounges should give some clue as to what type of services are on offer up here, but that is only part of the story. If you want to see naked women dancing, and by that I mean good looking women and not the low-quality girls in D’s Place on the Blok, then you need to head up North on a weekend.
I’d recommend the following tour on a Friday or Saturday, with the first place you should try being Club 36 in the Hotel Jayakarta. This place gets crazily busy on a Friday and Saturday nights and you will very likely find yourself the only non-Chinese Indonesian in there, but a smile and a low profile will ensure that you have no problem. The club employs Thai and Chinese girls who will do a topless and sometimes bottomless dance on the bar. However, this is not a place to meet women yourself, as most of the girls there will be attached.
So after this make your way to Sparks nightclub in the Sparks Hotel on Jalan Mangga Besar. Every night in the hotel bar they have a striptease where the girls get down and dirty. To finish the night off and for you yourself to get some action, as by this time you are probably very horny, you should pay a visit to the Malioboro Hotel on Jalan Gaja Mada. Here they have a large bar, seating and stage area where stunning looking girls in hot pants dance topless and will be all yours if the offer is right.
But should you not fancy any of the dancers, then there are probably a hundred other girls of various nationalities all kicking around waiting for a “romantic” guy like you to show them a good time.
If you still have energy left then why not pay a Sunday afternoon visit to the Today and Country club in Lokasari Plaza. It may look like a country and western club, but there aren’t too many honky tonk bars where girls go straight from high school to dance naked on a stage (Stetsons optional), while dozens of other girls of all shapes and sizes hang around in the shadows.
The one drawback of this place is that apart from the stage where the naked girls dance, the place is so dark that you often have little idea of what the girl sitting on your knee looks like until you get them outside. This being Jakarta, it is rare that you get a nasty shock.
A word of caution though, make sure that the police are not conducting one of their yearly raids on these establishments, as the last thing you want is your face plastered all over a reality TV show. Luckily, the last round of raids have just finished so you have a good 12 months to enjoy yourself.

went to 4play at alexis and club 36. i was so impressed with the sexy dancers at 4play
they really practice their dance moves with sexy choreography. they really use the pole swinging around. really entertaining since their ‘junk’ was just a few meters from my face ;p but the ‘booze’ are expensive though… (maybe because i brought insufficient ‘rupiah’. really did hurt my kartu (credit card) there.
you can get have a greater view in club 36, since the ladies dance on the bar.
At Today Country in Lokasari Plaza, they only go topless, not full nudity.
At Club 36, two sets of local dancers go totally nude at around 12 midnite and 3 am. The rest of the time are just sexy dancers from Thailand and neighbouring countries.
I have not been to Sparks, but, yes, a friend saw nude dancing there.
Malioboro - what can I say? My favourite stiptease club in Jakarta. High class girls dancing totally naked after midnight. Before midnight, only their tops come off.
