Bible Study, Anti-War demos, Girls, and Blok M

“You’d be crazy to go to Jakarta, it’s a dangerous place, something bad could happen to you there”, so said Dian as she stretched out on the bed of my room in the Ramayana Hotel in Kuta, Bali. For a girl I’d only met five hours earlier Dian was certainly very concerned about my well-being, probably something to do with her deep Christian faith I imagine.
She had popped into the Santa Fe Restaurant for a pizza and I couldn’t help noticing the Bible that was sitting on the table beside her, it turned out she was from Sulawesi and was working for a shipping firm in Denpasar and was just on her way home from Bible class. We got to chatting and went to the Hard Rock Café and then back to my hotel and she was now dispensing travel advice like an official at the Australian embassy.
It was too late, I’d been bored in Bali and fancied an adventure, my ticket was booked and I was flying to Jakarta the next morning.

One of my favorite things about flying 1st Class is the free airline swag. Singapore Air is by far the best Airline in the world no matter what class you are on. Good food, lots of booze, beautiful stewardess and generally great service.

Before beginning my diatribe, let me state for the record I certainly understand the utilitarian properties of the Thai bar girl. Why, if it weren’t for my wife-who I shall not preface with any adjective such as lovely, sweet, adorable, or kind-hearted (as so many seem to like to do when speaking of their spouse or children)-my own proclivity for bar girl would probably get the better of me.
Yes, if it were not for the wife, and my general shortage of discretionary funds, a harem I would certainly have. A different girl for each day of the month would be my bare minimum and Viagra would rest in bowls strategically placed throughout the house like M and M’s at a Van Halen concert. Moreover, nudity would be mandatory, and my girls would live on location doubling as secretaries, cooks, maids, and personal assistants.
Thailand has a habit of making old men young, allowing them to relive their halcyon days of youth and no place else on earth can you see such a superfluity of sixty-year-old men walking hand in hand with teenyboppers young enough to be their granddaughters. Young men who come to the country sow their oats, popping from bar to bar, getting drunk, hooking up, and having the time of their lives.

Thai women are renowned the world over for their beauty, grace, femininity, and sexuality. They have that certain something that makes them alluring to men and their diminutive stature makes them doll like, while at the same time, womanly.
If you are interested in meeting regular Thai women though, where and how do you go about it? When I say regular Thai women, I am referring to those who have a profession outside of the tourist entertainment industry. This means office worker, nurse, grocery clerk, doctor, lawyer, etc.

Making A Go Of It…
A few doors down from my office there was a company that sold fresh fish to many of the restaurants in the local area. I was friends with one of the guys who worked there and he had taken several trips to Thailand and Indonesia. We would take long lunches once or twice a week and discuss what life abroad would be like. He had spent several months in Indonesia and returned with more money than he left with so I was always keen to hear what he had to say. It was at this time when I first started to think it was truly possible to live in an exotic destination like Thailand or Indonesia.

I just picked up a Sony VAIO VGN-UX280P UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) from a buddy of mine that gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Well, he didn’t have to try that hard – if someone is selling a gadget around me I am sure to buy it.
The Sony VAIO VGN-UX280P is one of the smallest UMPC’s around, you can fit it in a case and wear it on your belt, or even shove it into the leg pocket of a pair of cargo pants.
An ultra portable PC like this could potentially be the ultimate “laptop” for Independent Travelers, it is only one pound and the size of four packs of playing cards 5.9 x 3.75 x 1.5 inches (WxHxD)

The Q Bar in Bangkok is Probably the longest running and most popular night club in Thailand. Q Bar is a modern nightclub (the first Q Bar was in Saigon, Vietnam) that usually has kick-ass music and DJ’s. This spot is popular with Bangkok’s upper class (yuppies) and Western Expats and is always filled with beautiful local and expat girls and guys. If you like to dance, drink and socialize this is the place to go.
Their are two floors, main floor is a long bar with booths (people tend to gather around the entrance) a terrace upstairs. I used to go there pretty regularly a couple years ago and it was my favorite non-sleazy place to hang out in Bangkok. Their is a 500 B (13USD, 10 Euro, 7GBP) cover charge that will get you 2 drinks, the cover is mostly to keep out the “common folk” and bottom barrel working gals.

Several years ago while touring the sierra madre of northern mexico I was introduced to Hornitos Brand Tequila (100% puro Agave sauza).
Out of the 500 or so name brands of tequila in Mexico it is now the ONLY one that I drink. The word “Hornito” translates to Little oven in English but this tequila has a smooth flavor and needs no chaser.
